The International Passenger Survey (IPS) collects information about passengers entering and leaving the UK, and has been running continuously since 1961. Wales received 892,000 visits in 2023, down 13% on 2019 but up 30% on 2022, whilst spend reached ยฃ458m in 2023, down 11% on 2019, but up 16% on 2022. Wales remains the only UK nation to not recover spend figures from 2019. The Welsh Government will be providing a further package of non-domestic rates support for businesses throughout Wales in 2025-26. WG will be investing an additional ยฃ78m to provide a sixth successive year of support for the retail, leisure and hospitality sectors with their non-domestic rates bills. This continued support recognises the economic pressures faced by these businesses in recent years and builds on ยฃ1bn of support allocated through our Retail, Leisure and Hospitality Rates Relief schemes since 2020-21. Following an emergency meeting The Welsh Association of Visitor Attractions (WAVA) which represents over 100 of the leading visitor attractions in Wales passed a resolution recommending that members close down their attraction for one day on Tuesday 10th December. The reason for the above action is in response to the Welsh Governments (W.G) proposed tourism tax where their own government reports indicated such a tax would damage the Welsh tourism industry. A bill to give local authorities the option to introduce a small visitor levy in their area to re-invest in local tourism, is today introduced by Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford The Visitor Accommodation (Register and Levy) Etc. (Wales) Bill proposes that people staying overnight in Wales and enjoying everything the country has to offer will pay a small charge. The money raised will support local tourism activity and infrastructure.
