VATsTheProblem: new industry campaign to cut VAT
Hospitality is united that #VATsTheProblem. A new sector-wide campaign, spearheaded by Tom Kerridge, is calling for hospitality VAT to be reduced from 20% to 10%.
Hospitality pays too much tax, and VAT is the single biggest lever the Government can pull to support the sector.

Employment Rights Act โ reforms of zero hours and similar contracts
On the 2 June, Government published a consultation of reforms of zero hours and similar contracts, arguably the most consequential part of the Employment Rights legislation for the hospitality sector.
The consultation covers three key rights:
- A right to guaranteed hours, where the number of hours offered reflects the hours worked by a qualifying worker during a reference period
- A right to reasonable notice of shifts
- A right to payment for shifts cancelled, curtailed, or moved at short notice
The consultation applies to employees and agency workers, but different rules may apply to each group depending on the circumstance.
The consultation closes on 25 August.
Extending VAT online marketplace liability to combat non-compliance
The Government is consulting on plans to more effectively enforce VAT collection rules for online marketplaces, with a commitment that โany revenue raised will be ploughed into improvements for the business rates system for pubs, restaurants, hotels and other businesses on the high streetโ.
Hotels and restaurants faced the most significant increases to business rates following the most recent revaluation, with three-year increases of 115% and 54%, respectively.
Responses should be sent by 18 August 2026
